Interview with Tiffany Vernon (@bohemianrealty)


Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path? 

As a private investigator, I had an eclectic group of clients. Throughout the years, several shared horror stories relating to Realestate transactions. While assisting a very special client with a particularly complicated financial/legal issue he said, “I wish you had your real estate license. You’re already handling so much of my financial and legal business, I trust you and can’t stand dealing with Realtors.” 

The rest is history! 

You’d be surprised how much cross-over occurs in Private Investigation work and real estate!

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this? 

I had the unfortunate task of calling another real estate agent and informing him my client would not be accepting his client’s offer. The agent and I had worked very hard on the deal, going back and forth for the better part of the day. Anyway, as soon as I gave him the bad news, he started screaming at me and for the next ten minutes, proceeded to threaten to kill me if he ever saw me in public. I can’t repeat everything he said without getting too graphic, but let’s just say his threats involved a myriad of weapons, including a metal pipe. I’ve had some pretty wacky interactions with other agents, but that was, hands down, the craziest.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”? 

Two things I live by to stay grounded and energized…Ethics and boundaries. Always choose the ethical option. You can still be an absolutely savage negotiator, but doing the right thing, in the process, will always serve you well. Keep normal business hours and don’t set the precedent it’s okay to call or text you all hours of the day or night. There’s no such thing as a life or death emergency in real estate, and nothing is worth sacrificing time with your family, or sleep!

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story? 

A client and business mentor of mine, named Andrew Miller, once lectured me on the importance of knowing my worth. I presented an invoice to him and he quite directly told me I was never going to be very successful if I didn’t charge my weight in gold. He reminded me that most people do subscribe to the belief they get what they pay for, and unless I wanted people to undervalue what I had to offer, I’d better adjust my business strategy. 

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world? 

I’m a huge believer in paying it forward. I always try to help someone whenever I can, and I’ve been an avid animal rescuer since I was very young. I can’t help but exercise empathy, sometimes to my own detriment.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life? 

“Know when to walk away, but never quit.” After being diagnosed with ADD following an arrest when I was 25 years old, I started to doubt my decision-making abilities. There have been many times in life I worried if I walked away from a difficult situation, I lacked follow-through; a hallmark of ADD. The problem was, I picked every battle and never let anything go. Conversely, I let people convince me I’d never been successful because I had a propensity to give up when things got tough. I had to learn when peace was more important than “finishing”, and when to push through a struggle.
