Interview with Gab Steele (@gabsteele)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I was scouted by a modelling agency when I was 16 and modelled during my teens before leaving the industry to study a Bachelors Degree in Art History, English & History full-time! I ended up finding my way back into modelling and signing with an agency whilst studying my Masters and decided to pursue it full-time after I finished studying.

My background in Academia and my career as a model lead me to start my own topical podcast (@havingagab). I have a passion for providing a platform for creatives to share their experiences in the industry and hope to help foster a better understanding of what it means to pursue a creative career path, and maybe help someone take that leap of faith!

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

I’ve had some crazy experiences modelling, good and bad! (but mostly good) One of the best was going to LA to work which I feel is every models dream.

I’ve also had the opportunity to work with some really interesting people, makeup artists, stylists, photographers, filmmakers, screenwriters and so many more (most of whom I’ve been able to interview on my podcast too!).

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Pace yourself and set goals, as cliche as it sounds. This is an industry that necessitates the hustle so it’s important to set time to switch off. We work very unconventional hours and you often have to be ready at a moment’s notice. So really enjoy those days off. I often take the train to castings and use those hours as chill-out time to listen to music, podcasts, or read rather than chasing up emails, chatting to my agents, and scheduling.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

Yes! my best-friends and glam squad Mitch & Dean of The Boys Studio. They (without even knowing it) helped me cultivate my look and image. I wouldn’t be me without them. They helped me find and feel my best self.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I’m a big believer that bringing goodness to the world doesn’t have to only be in the “big things” but the little ones as well and if I can contribute lightness, humour, and candidness through my Instagram as well as encourage other girls (and boys!) to go out and ‘get it’ then I feel like I’ve done the best I can and have brought something good to the world. You really only have one life! so live it well.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

The best revenge is a life well lived by George Herbert. This quote is a reminder to myself to stay in my lane and not listen to the white noise. You are the only person who should have autonomy over your life and anyone doing well and focusing on their own growth won’t be busying themselves commenting on what you’re doing. Just live your truth!
