Interview with Bilal Özcan (@bilalozcannofficial)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I’ve been a journalist for 44 years. I am a tabloid journalist who makes news and comments about celebrities. I worked for newspapers and television channels for years and worked as a journalist, presenter, and producer. But I have realized in recent years that the most influential and widespread media power in the world is Instagram now. The spreading speed and effect of the posts I share on Instagram is incredible. The feedback intensity of the posts is amazing. That’s why I’m on Instagram and I’m trying to be more effective and widely known.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Actually, I experience many interesting things, but let me give you two general examples:

As a reporter who once worked in a newspaper with a circulation of 1 million, now it is an incredible interaction power that some of my posts are viewed over 1 million per week, and some posts get hundreds of comments in a short time. And this success belongs to me and my colleagues.

This is a great pleasure. Thank you for giving this pleasure to me who is a 44-year-old journalist. The other thing I want to say is:

Even though I am a senior journalist and a popular journalist, I sometimes have difficulties in reaching some celebrities. Because most celebrities prefer to distance themselves from journalists. But now, most famous people have become my followers on Instagram. They comment and like my posts.

As a journalist who spent nearly half a century in the media industry, the birth of Instagram, its power in communication and its integration with the world population are no different than a dream for me.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

I make this call to my colleagues from time to time in my Instagram live broadcasts and in my columns on my website

I tell them that traditional media such as newspapers, magazines, and TV are now over, and Instagram is the most common and most effective media platform. “Come, open an account on Instagram, share interesting, original posts, shoot videos, reach people, show yourself, and what you do. Our future is on social media and especially on Instagram.” I say. And now I say the same thing once again here, thanks to you.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

There are two people. One is my computer software engineer colleague Okan Akbaba and the other is my assistant Tuğçe Turap, who is actually a textile engineer.

The most important problem of us digital publishers when starting work is to find professionals that will provide reliable consultancy service and technical support. I started digital publishing by building a website. My four years were wasted due to a lack of professionals who can give general advice and technical support. And then I started working with a young software developer, Okan Akbaba. Since I started working with Okan Akbaba, who has completely renewed my website and gave general consultancy, all my technical problems solved. Okan’s recommendations and explanations are very valuable. He’s well-versed in all applications and keeps tabs on all recent developments and updates.

And Tuğçe Turap

I opened my Instagram page in 2014, but it was asleep until September 2017.

I had around 3 thousand followers.

One day, a very famous Turkish television presenter and actor Vatan Şaşmaz was shot dead by a lady friend with a gun in a hotel room in Istanbul.

Turkey stood up …

When I saw the intense interaction of the news on Instagram, from the night of the murder, I started to quickly share my news and comments on this subject.

The incident was a ball of mystery, and the public’s intense curiosity continued for days.

My posts were showing immediate effect and my followers were constantly growing.

I like it so much…

It had been 8 thousand in a week. Two weeks later, I had around 11 thousand followers.

I was very angry with myself for keeping my account asleep all these years.

And now on Instagram, I am sharing posts every day.

I reached 33 thousand followers in April 2018. However, I did not fully master Instagram, which has its own useful features.

One afternoon, I received a message from a fashion page who wants me to post a collage about celebrities on my page. It was a beautifully crafted collage and the news was interesting. When sharing this collage, they wanted me to tag their own account name underneath. I gladly did it. The next day they sent another collage, and I shared it by tagging the name of their page. Both posts received a lot of comments and likes.

It turned out the owner of the account was a 23-year-old young girl who was getting ready to finish her school and be a textile engineer in two months.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

At the beginning of the pandemic, many people lost their jobs, many families were left without money or even food. People were sending photos of the empty fridges on DM and requesting food aid.

It was a very sad situation. I shared a message with kindhearted people on Instagram Stories and made sure that families in need of food and benefactors get in touch with each other. I helped to send food aids to many homes through online shopping sites.

I did this with my own budget as much as I could. Also, I always share ‘Emergency Blood’ announcements and such as Stories.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
