Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
It was truly an accident, I was the events stage director for a nonprofit organization in charge of booking entertainment for the Houston pride parade and festival.
I was a volunteer for the organization and truly loved dedicating my time to it. I was presented with the opportunity to book country music star LeAnn Rimes to headline our festival and of course I jumped at that opportunity.
Working with other talent and Artists in concert tours in the past I knew the work that was laid out in front of us to make sure the Houston pride parade and festival went above and beyond the expectations of a superstar like Leann Rimes. We wanted to make sure that we left the impression with LeAnn Rimes, when she left Houston, That we knew how to support our talent properly.
To make a very long story short shortly after Leann Rimes’s team left I received a call from her longtime manager and producer Darrell Brown and was offered the position of merchandise director for her and her team.
I moved to Nashville and began touring with LeAnn almost immediately. I was her merchandise director and communicated with our entire team almost on a daily basis regarding new creative concepts that we could bring to the public that they would enjoy and would purchase at the merchandise stand as well as all, Online in LeAnn’s merchandise store.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
One of the most fascinating elements of this kind of job is the people that you meet along the way. Of course, you meet superstar celebrities and famous songwriters but the interesting element of it for me is meeting the people behind these world-famous faces. The wardrobe managers that are tasked with the daily duties of assembling the wardrobe for a celebrity, The tour manager that is tasked with the daily objective of laying out the agenda for the day’s activities the transportation and the hotels are food while we’re traveling all the minor details one person puts together. What an incredible task that a person has and a huge responsibility. A lot of times people forget that behind the celebrity is a team very dedicated professionals that eat sleep and breathe, They dedicate their life to this individual to make sure they stay on top of their game.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
I think the music and concert industry as well as the personal assistant industry for public figures and profiles and celebrities probably has one of the highest burnout rates of any profession. I think that’s very important to know going into this industry. It’s very exciting, and it’s thrilling to levels I cannot even begin to explain. That being said it makes you want to do as much as you possibly can every second of every day. You wish you had 100 hours in a day versus 24. I often have to remind myself to take a day off when I can, turn my cell phone off, don’t answer my emails, and just relax and do something for me one day. That’s what I would remind anybody that’s just joining this type of exciting career. Don’t forget about you.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
Gosh, I admire so many people in this industry. But above anyone, I think the person I look up to firstly is Tanya Tucker, my boss. Want an incredible opportunity for myself to be a part of living history, this woman changed country music single-handedly. I still get mesmerized sometimes when I’m able to sit down and listen to her tell a story. Daily she encourages and pushes our entire team to do better for ourselves and not settle for anything other than the best. Watching her as a mother is also an incredible thing to witness.
Secondly, Darrell Brown has been a huge mentor and influence in everything I do in my career. If you were to look up the word creative as a creative individual Darrell Brown is that definition. When he hired me to start working with LeAnn I couldn’t get enough of his Creativity. His ideas in the way he approaches projects are something I can’t explain but I wish I had that.I
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
With each artist, I work for, or each tour I’m on there is always an opportunity for everyone on our team to give back in many different forms. One of the things that I’ve noticed when working with artists on tours is their dedication to wanting to somehow give back to the world, to give back to a community or organization or child or family that might not have. I have seen so many acts of kindness, so many moments of generosity that makes my heart sink seeing some of the things that people do as random access kindness. Those are not my stories to tell.
For me, When I’m in a new city, I like to visit the arts communities speak with other artists I like to hear the stories of up-and-coming artist I love to hear stories about people that drove 500 miles to see whoever it is playing on the stage that night and if there’s an opportunity for me to enhance their experience and sometimes there is I’m the first one to do it
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
My favorite quote is from the poet Rumi:
“Somewhere in the middle of right and wrong, there is a garden, I will meet you there.”
There have been lots of interpretations of this quote from one of the most distinguished poets in the world and I think everybody has their right to their own interpretation of what they believe. I believe that quote relates to me as everyone makes mistakes. And to truly grow in life you have to understand that mistake and understand how to not make it again and in between that mistake and understanding and learning it, is a peaceful transition and that I interpret to be the garden. It could be stopped in life, a position halfway through right and wrong to where you discover where you are and who you are. Often times along that journey of life unique incredible individuals meet you- and you include them in your journey.
