Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
Since I am 6 years my parents supported me and my brother André Katawazi by sending us to piano lessons. I didn’t like playing the piano so much so I started playing the drums at the age of 12.
When I started dating girls I realized very fast that the drums aren’t the best instrument to get a woman’s heart. The girls got a headache more than they fell in love with me. So I knew I have to change something. 😀
Then one day I discovered the Jonas Brothers. Their concerts were overflowing with beautiful girls and they lived the musical dream that I still pursue today.
So I started playing the guitar and learnt to sing. Since I changed the instrument again, I didn’t want my parents to have to pay an expensive music teacher again. That’s why I taught myself to play guitar through YouTube tutorials.
This decision changed my life because I still play a lot of shows around the world with my brother. Of course, this also increased my success rate at dates. 😀
In 2015 I was with my brother André at the show “The Voice of Germany” where we made it into the top 15 of our team. During this time we got to know many other musicians with whom we are in contact today and who support each other. This time also improved us musically, because you could work with very good singing teachers and the coaches of the show also gave you good tips for the future.
Since I am a very energetic person, my own music is not in the style of a normal boy band. My goal is to make people escalate with music while partying.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
Since I post music covers on Instagram, people from all over the world have followed me. Normally you would never meet these people personally, but my brother André and I have been singing on cruise ships from “MeinSchiff” and “Phoenixreisen” since 2015.
Therefore, we have the opportunity to meet these people all over the world, to jam with them or just to chill. The advantage that we also have is that we get a city tour of cool people at almost every port where the ship berths. So we have already met fans in Asia, Australia, Africa and of course Europe.
Sometimes I thought to myself: “Oh, you don’t really know who you’re getting into the car with.” But so far everything went well & I got to know super nice people.
So there is not one special story, but many small ones that show how music simply connects people all over the world. With every fan we met, we had the feeling that we already knew each other.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
- Pay attention to the people with whom you sign contracts.
- Seek out people who want to be successful with you. It is not important that these people have worked with superstars, but it is important that they are motivated to make you a superstar. For example management with good contacts will not help you if it does not use these contacts for you.
And the most important point is:
- Never lose the fun. Because that’s the reason why you started it. I’m not a celebrity myself and of course, that’s my goal, but you should also enjoy the way there.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
I am most grateful to my parents because they have supported my brother and me at all times. When we didn’t have a driver’s license, they drove us to every gig and they paid for every instrument I wanted to play. The two are still our biggest fans to this day. So my goal is not only to become a well-known musician but also to prove to my parents that it was worth supporting their children so lovingly.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
My brother and I have played at many benefit concerts to raise money for sick and poor people. These people are very grateful, which gives you a lot of pleasure. But I am also a very helpful person in general, so it goes without saying that I can help others if I am able to do so.
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
My favorite quote is: “The purpose of our lives it to be happy.” – Dalai Lama
I try to live every day according to this principle. Especially in this time of Corona, you can see how quickly life can be over. This way of life also gives me a very positive charisma. At least that’s what the people around me tell me. That is probably why many doors have already been opened to me because of course, you would like to work with people who put you in a good mood.
