Interview with Anne Freeman (@anniefree.art)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I am a self-taught artist that did not discover my abilities until I was 41. My art career took off quickly. I have done private wine labels, artwork for clothing companies and even had a solo art show sponsored by Converse Shoes.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

It has been amazing to have my artwork reach people all over the world. I have made friends with inspiring artists around the globe and even travelled to meet and paint with some of them, most notably the Magic Jungle Retreat in Tulum, Mexico to paint with Ana Victoria Calderon.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Learn to say no to projects that do not interest you. I say no to 90% of commission requests and only do the ones that I really want to do. This way, I still enjoy the process.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

My Dad was always encouraging his children to go after our dreams. But he made it very clear that our dreams could only be achieved by consistent hard work and integrity. He really instilled a good work ethic into all of us, and we all became entrepreneurs.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I created the Annie Free BIPOC Artist Supply Scholarship. I provide $2500 to a talented emerging artist. This year was the first year. I received over 400 applicants in a really short period of time. It’s been a really valuable experience to hear the stories and see the beautiful artwork provided by young artists.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“Do what you say you will do”. I believe that your word is so valuable, but only if you can be consistently depended upon. I don’t over promise and under deliver. I make sure I am able to do what I commit to, and then follow through. I think this is so important for building friendships, relationships, and businesses throughout life!

How can our readers follow you on social media?

I have an Instagram account where I post my artwork: “@Anniefree.
