Interview with Matthew McDade (buildandbakeltd)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I have constantly struggled with weight loss from a young age, I was bullied at school for being overweight and one of the biggest hurdles I discovered whilst dieting was that I craved sweet things and cakes. I love to bake so I started work on healthy treats so I could eat them on a diet.

This was the beginning of Build & Bake, I created a sweet potato recipe with my love for all things baking and my crazy Wonka like creative side, I started giving samples to local gyms and I myself was eating them whilst dieting for a bodybuilding show in Birmingham. It took the industry by storm being the first Uk sweet potato brownie company that focused on health and calories.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Having to go into a local shop and clear them out of around 100kg of loose sweet potato was very surreal, I got some very very strange looks as I wheeled out two shopping trolleys full of potato and on the same day getting my friends and family to do the same.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Balancing your time is key, giving yourself time every day to go through emails or questions and making sure the customer has a realistic expectation of when you will reply, this will help you not feeling pressure to have to reply at all hours of the day so you can not only focus on the more important aspects of the business but also yourself.

Also key is YOU, for me if I was ill then that drastically affected the business as I was the business so make sure you incorporate self-love by looking after yourself eating healthy, getting enough sleep, etc will go along way in making sure you thrive and don’t burn out.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

It is very difficult to pinpoint one person, I owe a lot to my mum for teaching me how to bake and giving me creative control in the kitchen, she is probably my biggest inspiration and is an amazing woman. My partner for driving hundreds of miles to come and bake whilst still Half asleep and in PJs to my close friends baking through the night to try and get enough brownies to take to an event as we sold out on the first day, I really couldn’t just name one, I have been very lucky to have this support.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I have used this success firstly to help others around me, to make it easier for people who are dieting to diet and to also help people balance their lives through food. Most people I speak to who struggle with weight loss struggles with the food aspect but I have actively helped them not only with my products but supporting them via working with coaches and nutritionists. Having a platform like Instagram and being able to do charity events and raise money for the British heart foundation was a big thing for me too.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

I don’t have many people I look up to but as silly as it sounds the quote the stays with me even to this day is my mother saying “It will be alright in the end” she said no matter the pain or hardship that you are going through at this time it will all be alright in the end. This has always stayed with me, during times of anger, sadness, and hardship. Knowing and believing these words make it easier to move on and grow and this really has helped me no end.
