Interview with Ellen Ko (@docbattleapp)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

During a holiday with my family, I was playing a trivia app with my children. The questions were educational and with each game, we became more and more obsessed with trying to out-do each other! Our natural competitive nature made the game fun and within a day, we were addicted!

This leads me to think, why not use this in my professional career? As a cardiologist, I work with very intelligent and competitive professionals. Part of our job is to constantly improve our practice with continued learning and keeping to up a date with new information. I thought we needed a Cardiology trivia game! And this is how DocBattle was born. DocBattle is an on-line, education game where you “battle” peers in a game or cardiology knowledge.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Since we started posting questions online and growing our community on a global scale, it has been extremely interesting to interact with colleagues all over the world. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We saw that the world was hungry for education, especially if stuck at home. We were able to adapt our content to have COVID-19 related cases, complications, and information as it became available. We are proud to be able to provide such a service for the medical community everywhere. Post-COVID, we believe that education, and especially professional education, will transform into more virtual methods and we plan to adapt to this new trend.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Keep your focus, but don’t forget to have a little fun. Although the world is busy, stressful, and complicated; try to find a creative way to break your routine. Maybe take a walk. Or play a game for 5 minutes. Then get back to it after your little break.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

DocBattle was created by Richard Kobza, Chief of Cardiology at the Luzerner Kantonsspital (Luzern Hospital) in Luzern, Switzerland. And the questions, content, and materials are created by a group of motivated educators from Switzerland. A list of our contributors can be found on our website (doc-battle.com).

We are a fast-growing community of like-minded learners, cardiologist, and healthcare professionals collaborating together to write questions, moderate conversations, and come up with new ways to create new educational content. We also invite our community to contribute their own questions and join in the teaching of everyone.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

We believe that DocBattle is an excellent tool for helping professionals continue to learn in an easy, low-stress, and fun way.  As stated above, once we started posting free learning questions, guidelines, and case discussions on our social media platforms — we found an international community of people interested in our educational style.  Today we are committed to bringing our educational message to every corner of the world.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” –Benjamin Franklin. This is what DocBattle is all about. We invite leaders in the community to share their knowledge and we encourage an open community where we can ask questions and share experiences.

How can our readers follow you on social media?
