Interview with Joseph Lizyness (@lizynessj)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

My path has been a wild one for sure. I served in the Army for 4 years and that included 15 months deployed to Iraq. I left the Army and started researching startups and publicly traded companies, which I turned this into an obsession. Then I started investing in startups with the hopes of creating generational wealth and obviously, funding innovators creating new technology and jobs. My belief is that I’d rather take a huge risk to gain wealth instead of putting my 401k in the hands of someone for 40 years only to see bubbles and market crashes play a game of roulette whereby time you retire, you hope that the market has recovered.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

I’ve met some amazing startup leaders that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Jose Montero of Blue Social and Parul Gujral of Snowball. These startups are being led by amazing entrepreneurs that are changing the world.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Know that success doesn’t come overnight. It takes time to grow and build as an influencer. It takes time to learn new skills. From startup investing, stock trading, book writing, and more, it takes time and we need to be patient as we learn and grow.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

My mom is my biggest reason for success. My mom was also in the military and she has worked hard her whole life. My mom is my biggest supporter and always inspires me to be a better person and I’m forever grateful to have her on my side.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I’ve donated to various charities and I am constantly mentoring others that reach out to me on social media platforms.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

Remember that life is a long journey and to enjoy it. Don’t compare yourself to someone else and forget to live your own life. In the day of media, we strive to be like our neighbors and have a bigger house and better cars. We need to live our life for ourselves.
