Interview with Jonatan Mengeli (@coachzworld)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Well, I have been playing football since I was a kid. Playing mostly at semi-pro level but also at the pro level in Italy, Belgium, and England.

Unfortunately, many injuries stopped my career.

I felt that during my career I was missing not only a fitness coach but also a mental coach to help me go through a hard time.

As I was at my last season as a pro football player I have started to coach youngsters in my last football team and at the same time studying to get my personal trainer certification in London.

At the same time, I have worked with mental coaches to shape my skills in order to help athletes and my clients to reach the best version of themselves.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

I have been training for 2 years one girl who had a massive lack of confidence. Not only with herself, but at work and in a relationship. She was diagnosed with severe overweight.

While training she told me that her family told her that she would never achieve to lose enough weight. Because of that, she lost faith. I told her that it was possible but the road won’t be easy. We lost 5kg for the first 2 months but in the third month, she gained 2 kg. It was hard for her because she was training really hard. One day she came to me and cried. Telling me that it would be impossible. I told her “If you quit I will quit my job as a personal trainer…” She started to get things right on a daily basis to improve her health. In 10 months we have reached our goal.

20 kg lost! She left her job to become a fitness instructor! I couldn’t believe it!

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Well, my main tip would be “to be YOU”.

Do not try to be someone else cause in the end we are UNIQUE!

Finding inspiration in other industries is key as well to avoid “burn out”.

There are many ways to run your business and to reach your goal. Be patient and discover!

Hard work is good but you have to disconnect quite often.

I love to practice meditation to relax.

Get holidays, enjoy time with your family, friends, or pets.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

Many people that I know personally and that I have never met helped me to reach my goal. One particular person that I’m really grateful is my mum! She always trusted my projects.

When I was playing football she was my fan number one! I remember when I was a kid, playing a game in heavy rain. She was the only one staying without an umbrella next to the pitch to support me.

When I started as a personal trainer she always told me that I was doing the right path to help people.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I have organized a lot of charity event for homeless people in my town. Right now I have a charity project to train kids in Uganda. During the lockdown, I was giving free lives workout on social media to help people not get bored at home.

And recently I m part of the organization “Black lives matter Barcelona”.

As a black person, I felt the duty to support my community on social media and in real life in my town. We did two big meetings so far in the center of the city.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“When you fall it’s to learn how to stand up better”.

I had a football trial for my first pro team when I was a kid. It was a 2 days trial. I played so bad on my first day…I felt so bad. I called my mum. She told me “Don’t worry, you can’t do worst now… And your challenges won’t expect you anymore…but it will be better for YOU”.

I came back the second day and I have played without fear. Everyone was shocked! Football coach made a joke saying that I brought my twin yesterday hahaha!

Failure is an experience to help us to move better on the next attempt!
