Interview with Osaka Jagoda (@osakajagoda)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I am a Master Hairstylist and Educator based in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I was in grade nine, I always watch celebrity hairstylist programs and fashion shows on the television and it made me want to be in the fashion industry as a designer or a stylist. Later, I was lucky enough to work with those celebrity stylists. I have worked professionally as a hair designer and a stylist for over 18 years. At that time, I have branched out doing many photo shoots, hair shows, and fashion shows. I got a start in Sri Lanka around the year 2000, where I begin hairstyle work in a small salon. At one point I was asked to come to Winnipeg Canada to run a family member’s salon there. She was sick and I came to help out by taking care of her business. I did that for a while and after time I had my own salon with 12 employees in Winnipeg Canada.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Since I started my hairstylist career, a lot of interesting things happened. I met different stylists across Canada and around the world as I always join Hair Show and Fashion Events. I learned every day and inspire me to be the best stylist I can be. I make sure that I inspire other stylists as well and help them be the best they can. I met different kinds of personalities and I like to meet new friends also I learn and got inspired by them as well.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

The tips I can recommend to my colleagues in this industry for them to thrive is to keep learning every day, never give up, and set aside your personal life and professional life. Attend training classes, workshop, stay focus, be confident, be positive, and trust yourself in doing hair as it is your passion. Initiate to learn new tips and the latest trend in the hair fashion industry.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

When I started my career in Canada many years back, I am grateful to the Salon Managers I work with. They help me to adapt to the Canadian culture, language, excellent verbal and written skills, professionalism, people skills, and most of all how to run a salon business, work, and deal with different levels of people. My past Salon managers helped me a lot to get where I am right now and they will always be my inspiration for life.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I am always willing to learn new things, new trends, and work hard. I always inspire and help people to be in their best. Help them the best I can and I always work extra time when they needed to. I share my knowledge, skills, techniques, and a positive attitude of a great hairstylist.

Do you have a favourite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

My favourite life lesson quote is “ Try and Try One Day You will Fly”. I chose that quote as I started my hairdresser career many years back, I always make mistakes, not confident, I feel that I am not a good hairstylist and I got fired in some salon I work with. As time goes by, I try and try and do my very best every single day and committed myself to learn and build confidence in me. That I can do more and I can be the best version of me. By the year 2017, I became one of the Top 10 Best Hair Colorist, out of more than 3000 Stylist in Chatters Salon Ltd. Canada.
