Interview with Benjamin Jones (@benn.jonees)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

My name is  Ben Jones and I am a professional rapper and dancehall recording artist from Cairns Australia professionally known as Ben Jones. Through thick and thin I have made my mark here in the Australian music scene. I was born ‘Benjamin Christopher Howell Jones’ on January the 6th 2003, in Nairobi Kenya. While growing up in Kenya I was exposed to ‘reggae’, ‘dancehall & ‘afro’ music. It was only until I moved to Australia where I found my true love and passion for rap music. I developed a unique sound that mixes reggae, dancehall, afro, and rap music all into one. Over the years I have reached over 300,000 streams on all platforms and have continued to drop hits such as – That’s Me, Ammo, Hi B**ch (Remix) and Give Me Your Love.  Here is a link to my music

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

One time I joined an Instagram video call with a rapper called Davo, who is well known for collating with Tory Lanez and having connections with Pop Smoke. We were discussing a possible feature on my song ‘That’s Me’ until I noticed Tory Lanez in the background recording music. This was the first time I had ever had any way of contact with a famous artist apart from myself.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Always surround yourself with successful people and people you trust. Just like the saying, you can’t hang around the chicken and except to fly, you must hang around successful people in order to gain success. Always stay true to yourself and follow your dreams.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

When I was in the 10th grade I was introduced to a guy called ‘Yves Sennane’. He was a photographer and business owner. I asked him if he was down to collaborate and take some photos of me and he was cool with it. We have remained close friends ever since and in 2019 he helped me shoot a music video for my song “Ammo” and we even started a jewellery business called ‘Bèlmont together. Yves was a really important person in my life as he knew a lot of contacts in the music industry and he was able to help build my brand and help me become a big artist in my city.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I always spread love and good vibes within my music as I always thrive on making the world a better place. My music is targeted to people with anxiety and depression. My music is a tool to help those people who are going through a rough time.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

A life lesson I learned is always to keep the people you love the closest to you. I lost contact with some of my family members and I never got to say goodbye before they passed away.
