Interview with Michiah Kadaf’I Ralphel Owens (@_collegecounts)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I submit that I have spent my life preparing for a career in teaching. I believe I can help impact my generation for better by being a role model for younger students. I have experienced how influential teachers are and hope to emulate that making positive changes in the world. I have a message of encouragement to my students, that no matter what obstacles happen in life, we can always change our story.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

As a student transitioning into TCC, I realized that every household raises a child differently. I was not able to express myself and my history with as much confidence as I have now. With the power of education, I was able to battle my insecurities and shortcomings. My breakthrough moment at TCC happened in my public speaking course work. I was always vocal about my opinions but after studying communication I harnessed the power of using words for growth, influence, and the spread of valuable information.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Stay in tune with the future you have envisioned. Trust in your heart, mind, positive influences. Control your work ethic daily, be as productive and efficient as possible always. Keep your head up and spine straight. Strive to be a karmic force of good to the workplace, home, and universe.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

My family and friends, for helping to keep motivated, happy, encouraged, and grounded. After almost leaving school due to depression, my family picked me up out of the more negative thinking. I needed a reminder to watch my nutrition, network, study habits, and mental health.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

This generation needs an example, my success becomes a part of the millennial story of selfless service for those in need.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

Life has so many roads and pathways to choose from, some already taken, some waiting for you to explore. Trust your inner compass and live in the present journey. I have chosen my life path and I plan to commit all I have to this industry.
